Haiti Earthquake Relief

Help us raise money for Mercy Corps' response to the Haiti Earthquake.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince Tuesday afternoon, collapsing buildings, including at least one hospital. Tens of thousands are feared dead in the largest quake to strike the impoverished Caribbean nation in 200 years. Power is out, telecommunications are spotty and food and water are reportedly growing scarce.

The first members of a Mercy Corps emergency response team are en route to help survivors. Follow the latest updates at mercycorps.org/haiti.

Firehouse will donate 5% of all sales for the week of January 20th - January 24th directly to MercyCorps.  Stop by or call for reservations at 503-954-1702. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

News and Notes

We’re starting off the new year with some great additions to our wine list. On the more  unusual side of the spectrum is  Frank Cornelissen’s 2006 Contadino 4, a Sicilian wine from the slopes of Mt. Etna, that may be the ultimate example of natural wine-making. Crushed grapes, wild yeasts, fermentation  time, and in the bottle. No sulfites, no filtering,  no nothing. A complex nose, not without some apparent  faults, gives way to beautiful, almost  startling fruit in the glass. Maybe not for everyone, but not to be missed.

Another noteworthy selection, also from Sicily is Arianna  Occhipinti’s   2008 SP68,  a Nero d’Avola and Frappato blend of fine depth and balance.  Bright ruby color,  raspberry and cherry in the nose, and black cherry and raspberry with a good bit of earthiness  on the tongue. A truly great drinking wine!

And don’t miss out on a chance to drink one of the best beaujolais you’ve ever had - Jean Foillard’s 2008 Morgon “Cote du Py”- a stellar wine by any standards with extraordinary balance.

New winter hours will begin the week  or January 3rd. We will be open for dinner Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 pm until 9 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5 pm until 10 pm.
